ABSTRACT
In the framework of artificial intelligence, reasoning based on standard assumptions, especially knowledge about typical objects and situations ( frame, script). Default reasoning is an essential element of everyday knowledge ( commonsense reasoning). Among other purposes, default reasoning serves to make a cognitive system functional, by closing gaps in knowledge with the aid of such normality assumptions ( nonmonotonic logic). Such knowledge can be applied, for example, to resolve anaphoric or temporal relations in text comprehension.
