ABSTRACT

The incorporation of materials drawn from content areas such as social sciences, literature, the arts, and so forth into language instruction. Proponents criticize other approaches for over-emphasizing skills acquisition in a narrow here-and-now context and claim that such other approaches have led to a marginalization of foreign language instruction in the curriculum. Content-based instruction, as well as cross-disciplinary programs such as FLAC (Forei gn Language Across the Curriculum), seek to realign foreign language instruction with the humanistic and intellectual missions of the academic curriculum.
