The compilation, description, and classification of the total corpus of idioms1 in a language. Depending on the theoretical framework, various typologies (based on criteria such as grammatical structure, permutability of individual elements, stability of expressions, distribution. and semantic motivation) were developed, especially by Soviet linguists. Fernando and Flavell (1981) provide an overview with bibliographic references.
