ABSTRACT
Language group in South-East Asia with approx. 140 languages belonging to the AustroAsiatic language family; the most important languages are Vietnamese (about 50 million speakers) and Khmer (Cambodian, about 7 million speakers). Some have a long writing tradition (Mon and Khmer on the basis of Indian writing, Vietnamese on the basis of Chinese).
