referential index

A formal convention, a referential index marks the same or different referents of a text through numbers or small Roman letters. In the sentences (1) Philip1 promised me2 [to come to London1] and (2) Philip1 helped me2 [to come to London2] the subject of [to come to London] in (1) is referentially identical with Philip, in (2) with the speaker of the sentence.
