ABSTRACT
In early phonetics, the speech process-in analogy to writing the letters of the alphabetwas seen as a series of discrete individual sounds (steady-state sounds) in which the articulatory organs did not move. For the transition from one steady-state sound to another, transitional sounds were hypothesized.
