ABSTRACT

The chapter analyzes social work's relationship to human rights, and explores the basis of social work as a human rights profession. It concerns the current emphasis upon human rights within the social work profession. Social work education in Europe has integrated human rights content and courses to a greater degree than other regions; the only degree programs that offer social work students specialized emphasis or joint study in human rights are in Europe. Human rights have the potential to reinvigorate social work practice, and to advance the profession to greater global relevance. Commonality between the social work and the human rights is their shared priorities. The methodology combines a case study approach, an internationalist perspective, and a hybrid inductive and deductive approach to distill practical applications of human rights-based approaches to social work practice. The chapter blends the findings from the deductive and inductive sections into implications for social work practice.
