ABSTRACT

For criticism of the Prologue see [83]. Of the Legends themselves, those of Dido and Cleopatra have drawn particular attention. Dido is discussed by Mann (1991: esp. 5-18) and N. Rudd (1994: 3-31). Hamel shows how Cleopatra’s sea-battle draws on literary conventions for the description of naval engagements in a welcome and accessible essay (R. Edwards (ed.) 1994: 149-62). Delany’s book prevents us dismissing Legend too easily (Delany 1994) and picks up on Dinshaw’s ground-breaking reading (Dinshaw 1989: 6587).
