ABSTRACT

Actors and their roles are described within the context of the private, voluntary and public sectors. These sectors and their importance will vary according to the political environment and the recreational activity under consideration. The kind of government will be particular to the country, and for the purposes of this book, examples from Britain illustrate the approach. The detail is unimportant, as structures (and especially names) are continually changing (even within the process of producing this book). The host community and environment are larger players today than has been the case in the past, and by means of example, possible roles and interactions are described. To make any choices and decisions we need information. Sources of information can be very important in providing the array of leisure opportunities. They will also help in the development of attitudes, some of which will be deep-seated. Communication has two components-meaning and emotion-and both are important in leisure and recreation. Family, friends, school, work, experts and the media can all provide recommendations. The most influential source of all is feedback from experience.
