ABSTRACT

Such migrations often have unforeseen consequences. Congestion may be a minor irritation for the family out for a weekend drive, but for the farmer this may be a crucial disruption to harvests that have to be brought in before any change in the weather. Other changes can be more severe, as with the pernicious spread of sexually transmitted diseases (Moorehead 1968). Depending on the themes which bind the community together and the activities which are essential for continued health and well-being, any mapping can be simplified to help focus attention on the crucial elements, or themes. The focus may be on primary production, where objectives may be in avoiding disturbance or adding to income from agro-tourism accommodation (Vaughan et al. 2000). Another focus might be on providing services where the income of the community is more directly dependent on the visitors but where the host culture may be under greater threat.
