ABSTRACT

The home, school and the workplace between them capture a good deal of our lives. We may not voluntarily choose to spend more time than necessary at work or school, or if we do, we see it as leisure. There is, though, a great deal of leisure and recreation in both. Keeping a diary or time log will reveal just how much. Job satisfaction is complex, but for many people the social interaction at work is, if not central, then extremely important. Humour, the exchange of jokes and conversation, is often only very vaguely connected with the direct purposes of work, although this interaction is probably essential for the health of the workplace.
