1.1 THE SQUARE OF THE THREE CULTURES

Not far from the centre of today’s Mexico City there is a square called La Plaza de las Tres Culturasthe square of the three cultures. It is really just a part of the city in which are exposed to view in immediate proximity elements of the three major cultures which have gone in to making this place. Three cultures juxtaposed. There are the excavated ruins of an enormous Aztec pyramid. There is a seventeenth-century baroque Roman Catholic church. And there is a complex of buildings in the International Style. The pre-Columbian, the Hispanic-colonial, and the modern.
