ABSTRACT

To understand the SC’s emergence, and its strengths and weaknesses, we must examine its origins. Its foundation was not pre-ordained by the transformation in the structures and values of Japanese society; it was established by an act of will by a charismatic leader who had the vision and drive to mobilize apolitical housewives into social activism. Peculiar characteristics that include a narrow support base of urban housewives, a male-dominated organization, and the type of issues the movement pursues, can be traced back to its founding moment.
