ABSTRACT

The simplest of mountain types are plateaus, but even here there is a wide range of variety. Several examples will be described which can be regarded as type specimens. Plateaus are eventually destroyed by erosion, and many stages can be traced from almost intact plateaus covering huge areas, through small remnants and eventually to mountains where no trace of original higher ground can be found. Erosional mountains, sometimes known as mountains of circumdenudation, are also treated in this chapter.
