ABSTRACT

Museums have traditionally communicated collections-based and associated information through a variety of media, but the advent of new technologies now presents them with the opportunity to develop new ways of communication which allow the visitor to explore the richness and diversity of collections at their own pace and to their own requirements. Sophisticated computer-based applications now and in the future may completely change the ways in which museums communicate internally and with external bodies. This chapter will discuss the nature of museums' information and documentation systems and consider some of the technological options currently available in the commercial sector.
