ABSTRACT

Heads who are poor performers present a special case. They have no direct line manger and those whom they manage may be the ones who are most aware of the problem. Such heads also cannot be expected to be able to deal appropriately with any of their staff who are poor performers. Thus poor performance in headteachers, where it occurs, is an enormous problem. Throughout the remainder of this book we have assumed that the headteacher is the principal person dealing with poor performance of staff. When it is the headteacher who is not performing his or her job competently, a number of issues arise. The whole leadership of the school will be affected.
