ABSTRACT

Serendipity is, serendipitously, everywhere-including in off-line, predigital text environments. Many is the time I have bumped into a wonderful reference because it was mis-shelved in a bookstore, or I happened to take a wrong turn in a library, or a right turn, but took in more than I had intended in my glance at the stacks. We might say that in the pre-programmed links on the Web-the ready nervous system it provides-serendipity has been elevated to both a way of life and an art form.
