Borders and barriers

There is widespread recognition that political boundaries create barriers to human interaction. Borders are common sore spots in international conflicts, and restrictive government policies are often most vivid in frontier communities and at border crossing points. Service industries, such as tourism, are particularly sensitive to political frontiers and their associated formalities and problems (Tucker and Sundberg 1988).
