ABSTRACT
Tragedy presents loss but its audience experiences an affirmation. Though pain, suffering, even death is represented within the tragic text, the means of representation, through its formal measure and control, can provide the reader with a sense of uplift and mastery (see Freud 1973-86, 11, pp. 286-7).
