ABSTRACT

Just what is the truth behind these common sayings? Well, we now know these ideas can be misleading. By itself, practice will make a skill more robust, rigid, and permanent. But that is about all. Simply spending time performing a skill you have already acquired does not automatically enhance your actual level of performance in that skill. There is little reason to assume it should. Studies into occupational skills, for example, often find virtually no relationship between measures of work performance and years on the job.
