ABSTRACT

Have you admired those people who can talk on the phone, clean their nails, read the paper, and eat a sandwich all at the same time? With demands placed upon us, coping through handling multiple problems simultaneously, or multitasking, appears as an attractive approach to efficient time management. The term began life in describing early computer operating systems, but is now widely used. In some quarters, the term appears as a pointer for a type of life style. We recently noted a brand of bread being advertised as promising energy for ‘multitasking individuals’, and an employer wanting to recruit a purchasing officer able to cope with a ‘multitasking environment’.
