ABSTRACT

The following story-a Fijian man’s account of how he came to fall in love with his wife-was told me during the wedding celebrations for a young couple in Sawaieke, the village on the island of Gau in Fiji where I spent eighteen months, from July 1981 to February 1983 (see note 1 of chapter 1). The man who told me this story was in his early forties-gentle and humorous, a thoughtful husband and father; his wife was a witty and lively woman, understanding and kind, the mother of many children. Their marriage appeared to be contented and successful; they were clearly fond of one another.
