Departmental history An Army Chaplains' Department was created in 1796, initially for Church of England chaplains, although Presbyterians were admitted in 1827, Roman Catholics in 1836, Wesleyans in 1881, and Jews in 1892. The Army Chaplains' Department became the Royal Army Chaplains' Department in 1919.
