ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a short history of the Australian sugar industry. The current structure of Australian sugar production is then outlined in some detail, with particular attention being paid to the nature of the sugar industry regulatory system which has been in place for most of the twentieth century and the deregulatory process currently being enacted. Case studies of two sugar producing regions in Queensland are used to illustrate the range of environmental, agronomic, economic, social and moral forms of unsustainability which have been associated with the development of the industry.
