ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 outlined some of the ways in which attention has turned to the representation of history in contemporary culture. In the work of a number of writers, as we have seen, this has led to a connected set of questions about the construction of social time. From a critical point of view, then, time has emerged as one of the central issues that need to be grappled with in contemporary fiction.
