ABSTRACT

In Cuba, as in the rest of the countries where plantations were established with African slaves, the myth of the mulatta as the embodiment of female sensuality is widespread. Gilberto Freyre’s quoting in Casa-grande y Senzala (1942:2:109) of the traditional Brazilian adage that states that “white women are for marrying, mulattas are for fornicating, and black women are for working” could easily be applied to Cuba, and Cubans do not tire of making the naughty remark that the best invention produced by our country is the mulatta.
