Performing a dream and its dissolution

During the winter of 1998, in celebration of fifty years of national independence, Israel’s Public Television produced a documentary series of twenty-four episodes on the history of the state since its inception. At the end of the episode on the Six Day War, my son, who had made a point of watching the episodes covering the first twenty years, remarked: “Now the sad part begins; there is nothing worthwhile left to watch.”
