ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book argues that one of the defining features of youth in neoliberal society is that youth is not only a subject of stigmatization but of celebration, embrace and empowerment as well. As the book discusses the youth as a revolutionary subject; young people are never empty vessels or passive dupes, even in the most top-down, hierarchical and controlled settings: there is, consequently, always a vast gulf between the official discourses of organizations. Critical understandings of youth as collective political actors have thus far tended to be marred by a number of limitations: a fundamental misrepresentation of uprisings as being youth uprisings rather than multi-generational and multi-institutional protest movements, within which youth and youth groups have played a vital role.
