ABSTRACT
Machines and technology are what we most associate with SF; just as we have now grown utterly accustomed to having a wide range of machines and technology surrounding us in our everyday lives. This might make it difficult for ‘the machine’ to figure alterity; but there can be little doubt that this is precisely the space occupied by the machine in the SF text.
