ABSTRACT

The achievements made towards sustainable development as detailed in this book have been secured without revolutionary political and economic change in the world system (although many national frameworks in Eastern Europe and the former USSR have undergone fundamental restructuring). These achievements have, however, involved a reassessment on behalf of individuals, nations, NGOs and international institutions of the constraints and opportunities of development and the environment (both natural and structural) and of the criteria for success in the exploitation and protection of the resources of the world.
