ABSTRACT

There are multiple applications for biochar for agricultural and environmental management. This chapter describes some of these applications which are currently being studied or are in the early phases of implementation. These include:

1 biochar addition to soil as a part of a voluntary or state-backed carbon credit programme;

2 as a multi-use material to be used on farms, e.g. as an additive to feed, silage, animal bedding and manures;

3 as a growing medium in nursery production and for green roofs; 4 as a sorbent material for removing contaminants and nutrients from water and

gas; and 5 as an additive in biogas reactors to improve performance and to help flocculate

and separate nutrients and organic matter from the biodigestate.
