Voegelin’s vision concerning the gnostic character of modernity is not a common currency in contemporary social thought. However, sociologists ignore the thesis at their peril as it is arguably the most significant further elaboration of Weber’s major theoretical and diagnostic concept, or the ‘religious rejections of the world’.
