Thus, as we have seen, Plato knew that a book once published can reach readers of every kind. And he knew, to judge from the evidence of the discussion of a poem of Simonides in the Protagoras (which we shall examine in further detail below) that different types of readers tend to take away different things from the same text. And he intentionally wrote, in any case in the majority of his œuvre, for everybody.
