ABSTRACT
There are many cultural images of the middle classes, but two distinct views prevail. On the one hand, the middle classes are respectable, traditional and deeply conformist, like the middle classes of George Orwell's Keep the Aspidistra Flying; on the other is the modernist inspired idea that the middle classes are ‘cultural standard bearers’, avant garde, radical and innovators of new cultural styles and forms.
