ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the union membership survey which was conducted in the east and west German clothing industry. As mentioned earlier the purpose was to provide a more systematic approach to test the ‘individualisation hypothesis’ by comparing collectivist and individualistic attitudes and behaviour in a sample of union members in the east and west. Thus, the comparative data of west German members are used as a benchmark to evaluate the extent of workers’ cultural support of interest institutions in the east. This analysis will also provide us with an evaluation of the works councils’ effectiveness in representing workers’ interests from the viewpoint of the workforce.
