ABSTRACT

This chapter shares with the reader how our current thinking has developed to take school planning forward well into the twenty-first century. It acts as an executive summary to provide a strategic overview of the models which we have worked through over the last few years and provides an holistic view of the detail that follows in the succeeding chapters. We examine here three models of planning. We outline briefly the original model that we articulated in 1992, then examine the need for schools to move from short-term school development planning to longer-term strategic perspectives and, most significantly, to incorporate a ‘futures thinking’ perspective. The third model, which we then go on to develop in this book, adds the concept of strategic intent in order that the planning process is more responsive to the needs of a dynamic environment.
