ABSTRACT

We hope that Chapter 3 has given school leaders the impetus and ideas to build a futures perspective. Once this outward and forward-looking mindset has been established, it will be necessary to seek ways in which the school might move on in order to prepare both the school and the pupils for the future. This requires that the school develops a strategy, which Johnson and Scholes (1997:10) define as:

the direction and scope of the organisation over the long term: which achieves advantage for the organisation through its configuration of resources within a changing environment, to meet the needs of markets and to fulfil stakeholder expectations.
