ABSTRACT

Freud and Jung produced elaborate psychological theories about religious beliefs and other aspects of religion. Furthermore they gave explanations of aspects of religion on which more orthodox kinds of psychology have had nothing to say, such as sacrifice, sacred meals, religious rituals and symbols. However, their theories are based more on the history of religion, anthropological studies of primitive religion and clinical case studies, rather than on the experimental and statistical data with which psychologists are familiar. Nevertheless a certain amount of solid empirical research has been done on some of the topics with which Freud and Jung were concerned, and we will see how far their theories have been confirmed.
