ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on one of the most common types of cybercrime which relates to the targeting of technology, where the most obvious example of this is 'hacking', and is based on computers. Whilst hacking was once solely about the infiltration of a computer it is also being increasingly used to undertake Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. A DoS attack is where a server or website is targeted with the aim of overloading it, in effect making it unusable. Servers and websites can only handle a certain amount of traffic. Spyware often finds itself separated from other malware on the basis that while its guises may vary they all share the same overall objective of invading privacy. The purpose of the Framework Decision was to create a common set of legal definitions and offences across the European Union (EU).
