ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by reminding readers what physical education is and what lies at its core. The chapter then considers priorities for physical education, within the context of the unique contribution that the subject makes to the curriculum. In the third part of the chapter consideration is given to changing priorities for physical education over time. Attention is given to the influence of physical education teachers’ own values regarding priorities for the subject, based on reasoned reflection and within a societal context. A brief historical background is then given. Finally, the chapter encourages readers to consider priorities for and content of physical education in the twenty-first century in order for the subject to make as full a contribution as possible to the education of all pupils.
