ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the Primary Skill Objectives, checking that people have mastered each to their satisfaction at the time. Perhaps as they have studied The Heart of counseling so far, they will not be surprised that author find that counselor's primary source of influence to keep client's safe through situations of imminent danger is the therapeutic relationship they form with each client. Remember, the strength of client's safety plan is the strength of the therapeutic relationship that establish and maintain. Don't get caught up in planning and forget to attend to the client as a person, to listen therapeutically and respond with genuine, heartfelt empathy and Unconditional Positive Regard. It has also helped to remember to use skills of therapeutic listening, empathy, UPR and genuineness in the consultations. And finally, it has helped to jump in and make the contact, without too much overthinking, in the situations where our making the contact seems best.
