ABSTRACT
We lived on Guam for a couple of years, where we were among a small minority of foreigners. Even though we intentionally chose to live and work in a more rural area of the island among persons local to the area, we would periodically realize that we had unknowingly separated ourselves and that we spent much of our time with other persons from the United States-persons who, like us, were from various states on the US mainland and who had come to Guam as teachers, counselors, or other professionals but who had not grown up on or were not local to the island. Each time we realized what we had done, we would increase our efforts to more fully integrate with the local cultures and traditions.
