ABSTRACT

You can tell that an idea or concept has had an impact on a society by the way it has entered the language and communication we use. For example, the words ‘leader’ and ‘follower’ can be seen in sayings such as: ‘lead article’, ‘leading from the front’, ‘follow like sheep’, ‘loss leader’. An examination of these sayings and epithets reveals an obvious attitudinal distinction. We tend to regard leading and leadership as positive and following or being organised by others as a lesser state; it is often used negatively to imply a lack of determination or independence.
