ABSTRACT

A central theme of this book is the relationship between tourism and development. In this chapter various perspectives on development are examined. They are all, in effect, about two issues that concern anthropologists. That is growth and redistribution. This sets a development context for the discussion of tourism, globalisation and the recurring theme of development that is evident throughout this book. As in the previous chapter, the style here varies from the earlier part of the book. This work on development is presented in a more formal manner, reflecting its rather heavy political grounding.
