ABSTRACT

The contents of this volume were first published by Allen & Unwin in June 1958. As mentioned in the preface, the monograph was the outcome of a three-year research project financed by a grant from the (UK) Board of Trade under the Conditional Aid Scheme for the use of counterpart funds derived from US economic aid.1 Its purpose was to evaluate the ways in which, and the extent to which, US direct investment in UK manufacturing industry in the mid-1950s was helping to increase the productivity of indigenous resources and capabilities, and the competitiveness of UK firms.
