ABSTRACT

Samples of work given in previous chapters focused on developing children’s concepts of God by encouraging them to diversify the metaphors commonly used to express religious insight and ideas. For young children especially the symbols of light and darkness are of particular significance because everyone has direct, personal experience of both. Therefore work in Religious Education can be planned which helps pupils deepen their thinking about religion by explaining why ‘good’ is symbolised by light and ‘bad’ by darkness. Gradually, conceptual development can be furthered by considering the phenomenon of shadows and where one should move at times of crisis. What do religions offer by way of wisdom which can help us make an informed, wise decision at such times?
