ABSTRACT

Word spellings can also be memorised by using a memory strategy called a mnemonic.

Mnemonics can be, amongst many things, acronyms, songs, jingles, rhymes, stories or catchphrases.

Mnemonics work well because they employ some or all of four major formats of representation that the brain uses:

1 visual 2 phonological 3 grammatical 4 mentalese, ‘the language of thought in which our conceptual knowledge is

couched’ (Pinker 1997)

This applies even in a simple sentence like ‘Only Crabs’ Eyes Are Narrow’ to remember the spelling of the word ‘ocean’.
