ABSTRACT

After Sarah learned “name of,” the instruction “X name of Y” was an effective way in which to introduce new names. Henceforth, X, a previously unused piece of plastic, became the name of Y, a previously unnamed object. Sarah produced such sentences as “Give X Sarah” and comprehended such others as “Sarah insert X dish,” showing in this way and others that she knew the meaning of X. So used, the word name of served to generate new names, and so new instances of itself.
