ABSTRACT

At the next level, plants might be separated into usable and weed (and the same division made with the animals) and at a still lower level usables divided into food and nonfood, again for both main categories. Whether each level should be represented by common members-as in Figure 11.I-or simply by a prototype is a matter merely of convention or the availability of a prototype (cf. Rosch, in press). The point is not to claim that this is done or, except in a laboratory, ever likely to be done, but simply to show that classification can have a visual or preverbal form.
