ABSTRACT
I shall begin this chapter by describing the development of a major area of my research and practice. Not only will this illustrate some of the differences and similarities between many different ways of involving students more closely in their education, but it will also illustrate, among other things, how theory and research have influenced my work, how important evaluation is to the success of any innovation and how a search for solutions to problems ‘drives’ much of my work.
